We had a good match, and I had fun shooting my
newly aquired Anschutz. The Houston
crew again showed us how to shoot, with Harry getting a bigger lead in
Sporter Class stats. Hope to see you in July.

USBR
Benchrest Match
Report
May
21, 2011
A spring shower let up just in time for us get our second year
of USBR competition
underway at our
100-yard outdoor
range, although the
threat of rain
probably kept down
the number of
shooters—plus it
was graduation
weekend for the many
colleges and
universities
throughout the
region. Despite the
lousy forecast, most
of the match was
shot in excellent
conditions: only a
slight intermittent
headwind and a few
errant drops of
moisture.
The
firing line looked
much different than
this time last year
with the addition of
five extremely solid
new wooden benches,
built by Ray Lang
with donations from
several club
members. We now have
a first-class
facility for
benchrest
competition, thanks
to their generosity
and hard work.
We
had nine shooters on
Saturday morning,
including four new
competitors, and the
upgrading of rifles
and equipment from
last year was
striking.
Once
again, we welcomed
Joe Morgan from
Bloomfield and his
high-scoring stable
of benchrest guns.
He missed a perfect
centerfire score by
two whiskers with
his finely tuned
Remington in 6mmBR.
Jaremy Douglas and
his left-handed Stag
Arms rifle became
the first to compete
here with an AR-15.
Collectively,
we bumped up our
rimfire scores from
last year with Joe
Morgan again the
best in his
divisions, but with
Michael Hunt, Tom
Shaull, and Steve
Krug not far behind.
Everyone
shot well; we got
the competitive
season off to a
strong start; and we
had a boatload of
fun.
Deep
thanks to all those
who provided the
legs and muscle
power to make it all
happen.

USBR Benchrest Match Report
June 18, 2011
Our
second benchrest match of the year saw a record turnout of fifteen
shooters, including several young competitors, and we began a new
competition category for semiautomatic rimfires.
The weather was almost ideal—an overcast sky provided
nice, diffused lighting and the light wind came and went only for short
intervals during the morning. The
wind had little effect on the rimfires and none at all on the centerfire
guns.
The scoring highlight of the day was a 100-4X in the
Unlimited centerfire class by our friend Joe Morgan, shooting his finely
built and tuned Remington 700 in .30-47. Joe had flirted with perfection
last month, but he drilled all ten bulls this time with those big .30
caliber benchrest handloads.
Congratulations, Joe! Glad to have you come all the
way from Bloomfield each month to shoot with us.
In the rimfire match, we had some nice scores from a wide
variety of guns. There were a couple of Anschützes, one Russian Vostok
CM-2, two Kimbers, and a whole passel of Rugers and Savages (including a
.17 HMR). The sophistication of the optics seems to be increasing, with
Leupolds, Nikons, Weaver 36s, a 32X Mueller, and one high-end 12-42X Night
Force that would be at home on any range in the country.
We also had an observer who drove three hours from Clinton,
Iowa, just to watch how we ran our match. He didn’t even want to shoot.
Many thanks for the help from PCSA club treasurer Rosemarie
Van Willigen. Steve Krug cheerfully handled a
lot of volunteer duties, including acting as range master for some of
the relays. Mark Lovig stepped up and ran the line so Steve and I had a
chance to shoot.
Thanks to all of you, and especially to everyone who helped
me personally by dragging my stuff around.
