2010 USBR S.E. REGIONAL & NATIONAL MATCHES
Hosted by N.A.S.A. Inc., Sheffield Alabama
May 15'th 2010
Even with rain forecast we had 4 states represented at the National Match this year with 16 Shooters in 3 Classes, the rain held and it turned into a beautiful day for a Match. We had a sunny 88* day with mild wind and 66%rh, one could not have asked for a better day except the mosquitoes were out in force. We got to meet some new faces and meet the people that make the USBR what it is today, we had a great match, great weather with great people and some great food and in the end all had a great time. We had only one ripple with the ruling on sighter shots but that is it! With 2 major matches with husband and wife, father and son, uncle and nephew all competing and only one minor problem that says allot about the people that make up the USBR, and I am impressed with that most of all. I hope to make the Nationals next year and get to meet some more of the USBR Shooters and punch some holes in paper, eat some good regional food and have fun, and in the end that is what it is all about. Until next year, yall keep it in the 10. Tony "T" Gilmore NASA USBR MD/USBR Web Master

Well we got off to a soggy
start and then the lightning hit, and did it ever 3-4 direct hits and even a
faint smell of burnt wood as a tree fell. After we got back up and running we
had a pleasant 78* with a cool breeze but that just made it worse when we were
finishing up with it back up to 94* with a heat index of 101*. We all had a off
day in Sporter but had I shot a new Club X Count Record in Custom Class thanks
to the kind folks at Eley
, I made the jump over to Lapua and it paid off big time and got the Suhl back
in the fight pushing 240 with 9 X's amazing. We had a few new faces and some old
ones coming over to give USBR a try, some better than others but what about
Susan Stone on her Debut with a 236-6X!!! Heads up yall we have some wicked good
Ladies and they all just kinda do it with ease so Morgan and Anedra better watch
their back with Susan in town, Congratulations to all our Ladies very nice
shooting today. Well to sum it up I just wanna thank Eley for dumping me and
Lapua for picking me up 15 min later it could not have worked out better for me,
I think I am gona like my new home and their product. Barry and I are back to
leapfrogging again and it feels great to be back, today is the first 240 I have
seen shot in months without looking at Bart or Barry's targets so needless to
say it will be Lapua in Custom and Unlimited and Wolf ME in Sporter. Thanks to
all that came out and supported our Club and Match congratulations to our
winners and to all that had the nerve to take on the Green Monster in a electric
storm and 100 degree heat, until next time keep it in the 10...

May 9th Match- CCTN- Rio de Janeiro Brazil.
Day started with rain and stayed rainy, overcast and grey throughout the morning. Relatively low turnout today as the dirt roads leading to the club were 100% mud and I’m assuming that some of the guys may have thought the match would be cancelled. Nonetheless, after much skidding and sliding, the die-hards made it in and we had a great time in spite of the lousy weather. Few “X’s” today; I assume that this was due to the constant light rain during the match. I know I could see a couple of my shots being blocked by a rain drop just in front of the “X”!! J Fritz Braun. This weekend we will be celebrating our 50th year of our range. We are shooting on Saturday and eating on Sunday, with a short meeting and a swap meet. We hold a swap meet at the range and it is a good time to get rid of shooting "stuff" we aren't using any more. Until next week "train hard and shoot easy". Match Report 4/29/2010
USBR at the Emerald Empire Gun Club
Welcome to the first episode of the year in the continuing saga of As the Powder Burns. Today’s episode is the rekindling of hope and mans eternal struggle to overcome adversary in the face of an ever changing benchrest world. But first a word from our newest sponsor, the Scope Bright Corporation.
Do you find that as the years go on that the picture through your high powered scope is becoming dimmer and dimmer? Do you remember how bright things looked when you were young? Well Scope Bright can bring back that feeling for those all important match days. Just a few drops of Scope Bright applied to your aiming eye will dilate the pupil of your eye so wide that all of the light on the range can come shining through, why the sight picture will be so bright you can even use sunglasses and still get a clear picture of the X ring! We are so sure that Scope Bright will widen your eye like never before that we off a money back guarantee, just return your $1.99 bottle of Scope Bright along with $42.50 for shipping and handling and we’ll refund your $1.99 in full. And as an added bonus we will include a unisex eye patch to use until or if the effects of Scope Bright wear off and you can go out into the daylight without fear of blindness. Use only as directed, following use do not go out during daylight hours or turn on any lights or look at any bright colors without an eye patch over the treated eye. Don not use in both eyes at once if you intend to use any motorized vehicle as driving with an eye patch over both eyes can be hazardous. Available at Chinese herbal medicine stores at an internet site near you.
And now our story.
The first match of the year is always a mixed blessing for our cast. Plans for hours of practice during the off season never seem to materialize so that the evening before the match our shooters realize that they can’t remember where they put their gear at the end of last season and now can’t find those all important items like ammo! This is not a problem for our well organized Match Director of course. He has stored all of his ammo in one spot so as to be ready for any shooting situation. As he opened the closet and gazed at the many different brands and lots of ammo sitting on the shelves he was struck by one thought, “Which ammo did I use in which gun last year????” Fortunately Mrs. Match Director has an excellent long term memory and is quite able to keep clear what the Match Director has done, or not done in the past, as the case may be, but that is a different story as they say. With her help he was able choose the ammo he hoped would be the best for the task at hand. The remainder of our cast showed up in a more or less state of readiness, a few were testing new ammo, a couple forgot to bring enough of their favorite lot and had to mix and match whatever they could find but for the most part they were eager and looking forward to a little friendly competition. After the first couple of targets it was clear that by in large our shooters had lost their competitive edge during the long rainy winter. Well, most of them had lost it. It seems that Mrs. Match Director had somehow managed to pick up right where she left off and proceeded to pretty well dominate the classes she shot in. As there are already several classes as it is it was suggested by one of our shooters that perhaps we should start a women’s class for Mrs. MD to shoot in and, so that she wouldn’t feel threatened by all of the male shooters, she could maybe shoot on one of the other ranges down the way a little bit! Needless to say Mrs. MD let us know that she was just fine beating… I mean competing with male shooters and that they should just be quiet and take their beating like men. The range was considerably quieter for the remainder of the day.
As usual we shot our typical sanctioned USBR classes and a few non-sanctioned classes as well such as Sami-auto and Vintage. The Vintage of course refers to the rifles used, not the shooters using them though it could go either way. There was a good variety of hardware in the different classes, 10/22’s of course, a Savage NRA match rifle, a Marlin Papoose, a Martini, a 40X, a Cooper, a ULA, a CZ or two and Stolle Swindlehurst. Scores were pretty good considering the 10 MPH switching breeze that seemed to plague us that day. On the final Unlmited target the MD relinquished his rifle so that fellow left hand shooter Cameron Goertzen could try his hand at a dedicated bench gun and as you can see he did quite well and won that match. Match Report For 5-15-2010
Today’s episode of As the Powder Burns is a tale of personal triumph, glaring omissions and abject contrition.
As you will recall from our last episode it was mentioned that Mrs. MD had a pretty good day and pretty much whipped up on the rest of the cast, so far so good. What the astute observer may have notice however is that the match results failed to show her scores! Somehow the Match Director completely failed to notice that he had not added her to the list of scores submitted for publication. Now from time to time Mrs. MD has accused the MD of tuning her out but this is beyond the pale. However, in the Match Directors defense it must be noted that Mrs. MD didn’t seem to notice the omission. Now this could be because Mrs. MD shoots for the pure pleasure of the sport and recognition is of totally no importance to her. Then again it could just be that she just doesn’t pay any attention the Match Directors ramblings in which case bringing this up now might be a mistake. On the other hand if she doesn’t read this she won’t know that he left her out. Or she may know that he left her out but is waiting to see if he knows he left her out in which case not mentioning it would mean that he didn’t notice and that would be really bad. Boy is he in trouble! Be that as it may the show must go on so we return to this week’s events.
In today’s match Bob Tews totally dominated the Semi-Auto Stock match shooting a personal best at 50 yards. Bob has a unique style and puts on quite a show. Larry Hixson came out to the range to test a couple of his Silhouette pistols and did quite well when he decided to try one out in the Semi-Auto Unlimited class. Dennis DiFeo, MD

.22 Benchrest at Emerald Empire Gun Club
The Fathers Day edition of As the Powder Burns opens with what seems to have become a permanent weather condition this year in western Oregon, cool, cloudy, breezy with a chance of rain. Needless to say this didn’t hamper the enthusiasm of our cast. Bob Tews once again arrived with his stock Ruger 10/22 and an assortment of ammunition to try. This however did lead to a slight delay as it seems that one of the plastic ammo boxes had been sitting on the shelf for so long that the lid had become welded shut. There was some talk of calling in the fire department to bring in the Jaws of Life to pry the lid off but luckily an application of brute strength from one of the younger competitors finally forced the box to open and our match continued. In the USBR Unlimited class Mr. and Mrs. Match Director continued the see saw battle for top place with two out of three going to Mr. MD for a change. Lucky for him she didn’t figure out the wind till the third target. Dennis D. MD

Match Report May 22, 2010
Our first USBR match as a host club was a great success, despite difficult wind conditions. We had nine rimfire shooters—spread across all competition classes—and two centerfire shooters.
The day was bright and sunny at the club’s 100-yard, outdoor range south of Montezuma, but by the 10:00 a.m. start time for the rimfire shooters, the wind was kicking up at a steady 20 mph and frequent gusts as high 30 mph. We were working with makeshift arrangements to support our regular 100-yard target frames at 50 yards, and even with last-minute reinforcement, some of the targets swayed in the breeze, making it even more difficult to score on that fiendish 25-bull target.
The wind bothered some shooters more than others, and although we thought the scores were generally lower than they might have been, at least one shooter—Rod Boggess with his brand-new, not-yet-broken-in Ruger 10/22—appeared to have no trouble reading the conditions.
We all had a very enjoyable time, and the fellowship and conversation were excellent. There was a good mix of relatively new PCSA shooters with veterans of small-bore prone and high-power Match and Service Rifle competition, plus several shooters from the NRA Conventional Pistol discipline.
For our club’s first benchrest match, one of our members custom built four benches (which will now be kept at the range), and another member resurfaced our current, badly deteriorated permanent bench during the week before the match. Along with a varmint-shooting member’s portable bench, we were able to support a relay of six shooters at a time.
The PCSA club members were also pleased to welcome the father-son duo of Wes and Drew Johnson from Eddyville, Iowa, which is a considerable drive away.
We are pleased to be a part of the USBR, and we anticipate four more successful matches between now and September.
Our next match is Saturday, June 19. Ed Purcell, Match Director

Match Report 6-19-2020
Our second foray into the benchrest discipline was met with warm, sunny weather that was a welcome contrast to several preceding days of nasty Midwestern thunderstorms and high winds. There was only a slight breeze from directly behind for most of the Saturday morning competition.
We had eight rimfire shooters and seven centerfire shooters, for a composite total of ten competitors. We enjoyed hosting Joe Morgan from Bloomfield, who brought a pickup load of great-shooting guns with him and shot six targets himself. And, it was a pleasure to see ten-year-old Mitchell Wherry (supervised by his dad, Mike) shooting his custom Ruger 10/22.
There was a good spread across the USBR categories, but no Plinker entries this time. Rimfire Custom and Centerfire Factory drew the most shooters.
Everyone shot well, especially given our overall lack of benchrest experience. As usual, Margi Constantino turned in a good score, especially since she was using a borrowed gun with a buggered scope mount that could not be tightened. Other PCSA members, such as Tom Shaull, Steve Miller, Serena Shaull, Hugh Sheridan, Mike Phillips, and Cal Wiseman, who also shoot other firearms disciplines, shot as well or better than last time, and we anticipate continued improved numbers as the summer goes on. Seventy percent of the rimfire shooters this time shot over 200.
We appear to be one of the few USBR host clubs sponsoring centerfire competition, and we had a good turnout—mostly by people with hunter or varmint guns. There are several 200-yard benchrest competitions in the state and at least one 1,000-yard series of matches, but we may be one of the few to offer a 100-yard match. Of course, the USBR target is really tough at 100 yards. We are still feeling our way toward the best combination of distance and number of targets for us. We shot ten bulls for this match, allowing plenty of time for barrels to cool.
Thanks to the many volunteers who made the match possible both in preparing the facilities and setting up on the day of the match. We would not have a competition without you. Ed Purcell, Match Director
