It turned out to be a beautiful day with a light turnout for some reason but
it was still a great day to be at the Range. We are off to a good start for
the 2010=2011 points race for the 3'rd annual NASA Sanctioned USBR Club
Championship, with some of the scores climbing the way they have been we will
have a great year and a very hott race come September 2011. I hope the weather
holds out for at least 1 more month before it gets cold and the search for
winter ammo starts back up, it will be a huge year to come look for
announcements coming soon and our new BIG Match schedule is revealed along
with year long Sponsors. Keep it here @ RFS for updates and keep it in the
10!!!

Today we decided to shake
things up a bit and shoot at 50 Meters rather than 50 Yards just to see what
would happen and we managed to set 1 World Record and Break another.
We shot on the 100yd
Range which is a total different experience than our soon to be old 50yd
Range, it has lots more light and wide open to the wind and elements that act
100% different than they do on the 50yd Range. It was an interesting day to say
the least with every shooter pulling for the others to tie or break all the 50
Meter World Records that have stood for a little over 3 years, Willie pulled
it off in Sporter with a very respectable 231-2X and I shot the first 50 Meter
Plinker World Record with a meager 152-0X which at 50 Meters is a long way to
see with a 9X Scope vs. the 36X I am used too.
Congratulations to Willie and all that came out and shot our little experiment
we will do it again sometime in the Winter or Spring as soon as we get a
decent weather day for a Match, also to give the 50yd side a chance to heal
and settle from being chopped, cut back, and berms rebuilt.
Remember we will shoot all Winter but if the weather forecast is less than 50
degrees we will not shoot for Sanctioned Score just for Club Score and Club
Points, with a setup time of 8:00 and Shoot at 8:30. If we get lucky and have
nice weather above 50 deg. we will shoot Sanctioned Matches for National and
Club Score with a setup time of 7:30 and shoot at 8:00.
Congratulations and Thanks to all that shot today and Willie on his new World
Record, till next time Keep it in the 10!!! Tony

It
was 29 today at the range, that is probably why only 4 of us showed up to
shoot. We had about 3" of snow and it was cold. The only thing
that saved us was that the wind was not blowing. Paul was match winner
with a great score considering how cold it was. Hope we have a better
turn out next

I've been testing guns in hopes of
finding some low-cost entry-level .22 that would compete well (or at least
potentially well) in Sporter.
Here's what I found after a LOT of group
shooting and shooting for score on the USBR target.
Best Buy for Money--Savage Mark II FV.
This is the Plain
Jane of the Mark II family and comes with a cheezy and flimsy
synthetic stock, but it has the regular Savage receiver and barrel and the
Accutrigger. I managed to shoot half inch or slightly better
groups with it at 50 yards using Wolf Match (which it liked best after
testing several mid or low target brands). It shot about the same
whether off of bags, a rest, or a bipod. I didn't get any really great
scores, but after several sub-200s, I finally managed a 212-0X. In the
hands of a better shooter, this gun should reach the 220s. The FV retails
here for $215, which makes it a very good buy.
Most Accurate--CZ American 452. I had the
model set up for Shilouette Shooting, so it had a really flimsy,
lightweight plastic stock. I tried to mount a bipod but the front swivel
screw pulled out of the plastic, so I shot it only from a big Caldwell bag
that could get a grip on the narrow forearm. Despite these annoyances,
this was the most accurate of the .22s I tried. It was capable of
consisten groups of one third or one quarter of an inch (Wolf Match
again). I didn't score too well with it, but my high of 216-0X was good
enough to "win" the rimfirecentral.com
online contest in the Factory sporter class for October. This gun
obviously has the potential to score in the high 220s or low 230s with a
better scope, a little trigger tuning, and a better shooter. However,
it costs more than twice as much as the Savage FV: somewhere over $500.
The Varmint
version with a heavy barrel and flat forearm is recommended for benchrest
shooting at approximately the same price.
Nothing too surprising here, since a lot of
good shooters have CZ Americans, but it was worth finding out the relative
accuracy and identifying a solid shooter in the FV that goes for not much
money.
I also tried out the new Savage Mark II TR,
which is great looking rifle with a painted, laminated black tactical
stock from Boyd's and a long fluted heavy barrel. It is a looker,
but I could never get it to do a half inch consistently. It would have to
go into the Custom class because of its weight, so I at least would never
be able to get it to a competitive level.
