The wind was blowing, but we are getting use to that . The good news is that we sent a new world record for Custom, .22 pistol. The old record was 242/12X. Yesterday I shot a 247/14X. I used my last rounds of Ely Team. My gun just loves that ammo.
Kolin, I will make out a certificate and get it in the mail, to you, for signature.
Since I do the scoring I do my shooting after the others have finished. But I make sure that a couple of shooters are still on the range. Paul Prather and Rich Bumgardner were on the range, in fact when I shot my perfect score, Rich was on the range. I guess I will have to make sure I only shoot with Rich on the range.
To tell you the truth I did not know it broke a record until I got home and started posting scores.
Our shooting group is getting larger one by one. One of our shooters had heart surgery and all he could asked the Doctor when he could get back to the range and shoot USBR. The doctor OK'd him to shoot, but he couldn't drive. So a friend, Brian Peter, has been driving him to the matches and Brian enjoyed it so much that he is now shooting with us and shooting some really respectable scores.
By the way last weekend we had a big picnic and celebrated our 50th year as a range. We still have some of the original members still shooting. Train hard and shoot easy, Bob KadowClark Rifles Inc. Director of USBR shooting.

Today’s exciting episode of As the Powder Burns is a tale of the old battling, well the slightly less old and a cautionary tale to always review the rules before engaging in a contest.
As both of the fans who have been following our series will remember Bob Tews has been dominating the Box Stock class for the last several matches. Now Bob will admit to being “about 87 years old”. However it is reported that he has been seen wearing a tee shirt with the slogan “Get our troops out of Valley Forge” from the late, very late Betsy Ross collection as marketed by the Hudson Valley Trading Co. chain just after Betsey was acquitted on charges of using illegal aliens to make her product when a raid discovered 16 undocumented Iroquois Indians sewing in her one room cabin. In court it was discovered that her VP had smuggled them in from the northern territories without her knowledge claiming they were his cousins on his French mother’s side here on student visas, but I digress. Along to challenge him today was John Stevens. At a spritely 84 years of age John is just beginning his career in the field of semi-auto BR and today was his first match. Bob, feeling the pressure reached down deep into his vast years of experience and with the assistance of his coach Wes King managed to hold on to his title and shot career high scores at both 25 and 50 yards proving that he still has it!
In the Unlimited match it looked like a close match between our three shooters but Jerry realized that he had brought the wrong ammo as it was over the $8.00 a box limit in the semi-auto class and decided to continue the match just for fun to see where he would have come out, as you can see he would have done very well.
Next month’s match will be on Aug. 21st. With just two more matches left in the season can Bob hold on to his title as the all time winner in Box Stock, will Jerry find a good lot of cheap ammo, will the descendants of the Iroquois ever get free healthcare? These and many more questions will be answered in upcoming episodes of As the Powder Burns.Dennis DiFeo, MD

Today’s episode of As the Powder Burns is as much a tale
of man verses nature as it is the story of man verses man. Our
cast began to arrive at the range quite early on this rather
unseasonably chilly summer morning each eager to get their gear
meticulously set up so as to achieve maximum accuracy from their
carefully prepared rifles. As the contestants placed their wind flags out on the
range the Match Director couldn’t help but notice that none of
the flags seemed to pointing in the same direction at the same
time, in fact they seemed to be indicating that the wind was
coming from three different directions at the same time! This
did not go unnoticed by our keen eyed marksmen who then resorted
to the well established practice of putting out additional flags
to try to “dope” the wind. Alas this only led to further
confusion as the additional flags simply pointed in still
different directions than the original flags. So now our
shooters were faced with thirteen mile per hour winds coming
from all directions at once! This was certainly going to be an
interesting match and the Match Director could see that he was
going to have to break out his calculator when it came time to
add up the missed points when scoring targets. Conditions
remained difficult for the entire match with one brief period of
respite when a cloud passed over the range during match number
two, Jerry took full advantage of this short period and shot the
high score of day, 247 8X. The lone cloud quickly passed on as
the target frames were moved from 25 yards to 50 yards and that
calculator got a good work out during scoring. Dennis DiFeo, MD

This is the season finale of As the Powder Burns. It would appear that our season is closing just in the nick of time as Mother Nature has signaled that the glorious weather that we have been blessed with is about to come to an end. While the cast had to endure a few sprinkles and the Match Director had to score a few soggy targets it was still a pleasant day. That’s not to say things went smoothly for a couple of our competitors though. Jerry started the day pretty well, unfortunately he only had enough of his preferred ammo left for one target, after that it was sort of a mix and match affair as he tried several other lots and brands of ammo on his next three targets. It appears that his rifle has rather particular tastes about what it’s fed and will accept no substitutes in its diet. Well at least he has all winter to test. Arlin started out rather well taking first place on the first 25 yard target. With the move to fifty yards on target number three things became much more difficult for him. It seems that between the poor light conditions due to the heavy overcast and the scattered rain drops causing dark spots on the targets he was having some difficulty seeing the bullet holes. When he brought the first fifty yard target in to be scored he didn’t shoot one of the bulls, on the next target he left two of the bulls un fired upon. Then to add insult to injury when he packed up to leave the range he left his shooting stool under the bench and drove off. Fortunately for him the Match Director noticed it and took possession of it for safe keeping and will return it at the air gun match next week. The Match director briefly considered shortening just one leg of the stool before returning it but has since decided that that might be considered poor sportsmanship on his part. Perhaps he’ll just wax the top so Arlin will just sort of slide around a bit. Dennis DiFeo, MD

Benchrest Match Report—July 24, 2010
Lightning streaked across the southern horizon just as the first pickup pulled into the club’s 100-yard range. Five hours later, a steady drizzle began as the lastvehicle exited, but the rains that had swept the Hawkeye State for the previous week had given us a short reprieve in between—and we made the most of it. We had nine shooters, several of whom shot more than one target in more than one category with more than one gun. No plinkers or sporter/hunters, but the other USBR classifications were covered, with strong performances in all of them. Several shooters enjoyed the match so much (or they were so frustrated) that they shot second targets in the next relay. As in our previous matches, most shooters fired guns originally built for some other kind of shooting. Two of the most interesting and unusual were Dave Kaiser’s Schützen rifles, which are distinctive German-style single-shot guns usually shot offhand and, in the case of his centerfire modified Ruger No. 3 gun, they take cast bullets that are loaded separately from the case with powder and primer. Dave brought his own purpose-built custom bench and sighted in through a classic exterior-mount-adjusted Tasco scope when he shot his rimfire Martini. Many of the club’s dedicated local shooters turned out, and we again welcomed Joe Morgan from Bloomfield. We also were happy to meet Josh Weisleder, Ray Lang’s young friend. These benchrest matches give us a great opportunity to greet old friends as well as make new ones and to talk about guns and shooting techniques. What a pleasant way to spend a Saturday morning! A very, very large thanks to Tom and Serena Shaull for setting up the range and to several others who helped them dismantle the targets and benches—plus, extra special gratitude to Serena for acting as range officer for most of the relays and scoring most of the targets. The next match is August 21. Ed Purcell, Match Director

Benchrest Match Report—August 21, 2010
The match director (meaning me) at the last minute was unable to attend the match due to the ill health of a family member, but club president Margi Constantino and high-power director Tom Shaull smoothly took over and ran the match. The numbers were down because several regulars were unavailable for the match due to injury, illness, or out of town travel, but there were three new shooters, including a young shooter who was helped to re-zero his rifle by some of the veterans. We had our first .17 caliber shooter, which was a nice addition. I have to point out to anyone reading this from out of state that when the Iowa State Fair is in session, everything else takes a back seat. We look forward to our final match of the year on September 18, which is also opening day of deer season for disabled hunters, so it will be a busy day for some of us! Happily,Iowa’s giant Whitetails are laughably easier targets than the USBR Green Monster.Ed Purcell, Match Director
(I was disappointed to miss the match, so I went out the next day and shot a target round by myself. It doesn’t count, but I felt better.)

Benchrest Match Report—9-18-2010
The final benchrest match of the season attracted eager competitors and demonstrated yet again the sheer good time that can be had when shooters get together to test their skill against each other and themselves. Despite threatening clouds and the occasional wet drizzle, there was a line up of pickups at the PCSA 100-yard range by 8:00 a.m. The benches and the target stands went up, the signup was quick, and the rimfire match began. As has become our usual routine, several people wanted to shoot more than one gun or more than one target, so there was enough demand to require three relays of rimfire. In the midst of the first relay, a really nasty swirling wind descended and resulted in slightly lower scores. It was easy to see from the quality of the rifles, rests, and ammunition on the line that all of us first-year shooters had learned a lot about benchrest competition since May. The most experienced among us was, again, Joe Morgan who had driven through storms from Bloomfield to shoot with us. The centerfire match required two relays when two of the competitors wanted to shoot two targets. We also all seemed to have learned a lot about shooting the USBR target at 100 yards: which is to say, it’s very hard to see the eight ring even with a good scope, and the ten ring is something that exists only in the shooter’s mind. When the shooting and scoring were over, we packed away the benches and the target stands, and we talked about next year and what we want to keep and what we want to change. Our five matches this season were a great start on a new competitive discipline for the club. The high individual rimfire score for the season was Margi Constantino’s 233-1X fired with an Anschutz in Custom class on August 21. Close behind was Tom Shaull’s 232-1X with his Remington 40X in Unlimited on July 24. Joe Morgan was well in advance of the rest of the centerfire field with his excellent 6BR and .308 caliber dedicated benchrest guns, shooting 96-4X in Varmint and 95-2X in Unlimited, back-to-back at our second match on June 19. Congratulations to the high scorers and to all our shooters. I’ve thanked—both in these match reports and in person— all those who worked so hard to make this a successful experience for the PCSA. Your help from building benches to mowing the range to setting up equipment and more was invaluable. Thanks again. Thanks for the help and advice of the USBR officers, and until next year, we wish that you all may shoot 10X whenever you touch off the trigger. Ed Purcell, Match Director
