Match day arrived once again in the Mountian State, with the USBR Centerfire director wore clear out from a coaching trip with a youth position rifle team that had him back just in time from a week long trip to the mid west. Once again the wind was very much present, more so than my sleepy eyes could see, as the scores will prove..There was five shooters present and there classes and scores are listed below.

Our matches are getting so popular that we have been asked by our members to put on a USBR match in the evenings. So starting next week we will have a match every Thursday starting at 4:00pm to 7:00pm. If the guys shoot in the morning, they can come back and pay again and shoot in the evening. We will only have this in the summer because of the longer days. We’ll see how it works out.

The weather was really nice today except for the wind. Shot some really nice scores today. Our shooters are really coming along. Now that school is out we picked up a junior shooter that came out with his Dad. Hope to get some more of them during the summer.

Also the .17 cal Rimfire 50 yard record is 220 set by Bob Springstead and last week Chuck Fox broke the record with a 224 3x. I forgot to report it.

Hope all is well with everyone.

Bob

We had a good turnout this month. We had 19 shooters who shot 43 targets. Doyle Martin made it back from his open heart surgery. We had pretty good weather with just a slight breeze.

We had 4 different winners of the money cans this time. I hope it didn't depress Charles too much, he has been winning all of them. The door prizes were won by Jenna,Jay,Rhiannon,Dwayne,Ryan,Charlie,Trevor and Harry. Poor old Emily didn't win anything- I can't believe it as lucky as she is. We had one new shooter Trevor Koch, and Dewayne Burgess returned after a 2 year layoff. Doyle Martin is suppose to have some more surgery next week and said he might not be able to shoot anymore so he has 2 really nice guns for sale. If anyone is interested contact me and I will get you in touch with him. It's hot this time of the year but we have the coolest range at the club and we have 2 fans now to keep a breeze going. Hope to see everyone next month at the July Match, till then keep it in the 10 ring.

Well we finally had a day when the weather was really nice. Still a little cool, but the shooting day was great. Had our usual good turn out with a couple of new shooters. Scores weren’t as good as they could have been, but they were OK.

The month of May centerfire 100 yard shooting match report for the BCGOA held in Flatwoods West Virginia..

Five shooters came out and we might have all been better off if we had just rolled back over and went back to sleep this morning..it rained the wind blew, then it rained and blew, then it really blew...one man quoted Forest Gump ,"it was raining sideways and even looked like it was raining from the ground up at times"... none of us did well but the match was run none the less.Your good ole USBR CF director ,just barely squeaked out the varmint custom class win today by X count only....

Emerald Empire Gun Club USBR

Todays episode of As The Powder Burns is a sad tale of misery and woe as nature its self seems to have conspired against our Match Director. It seems the northwest has been in the grip of a turbulent weather pattern focused on the total distruction and demoralization of rimfire shooters. As you recall from the last episode we had snow, rain and hail, it seemed spring would never come. Yeterday we had summer, a record high of 94 degrees and hot dry gusty wind. Now this may not seem like much to you desert dewllers but for our shooters this is the equivalent of standing right next to the very gates of Hell and feeling the blast!!! Now our Match Director had some new ammo to test today in his heavy gun and knew that the only way to determine it's value would be in the fire of competition. He also knew that patience, waiting for just the right condition would reward him with a high score. At the commence fire command he shot a few sighters to test the wind, no good so he waited....... one minute, two minutes, four minutes, six minutes, seven minutes and still not a shot at a record bull. Then, with less than 13minutes of firing time left it happened, the wind paused. He fired a sighter to comfirm and quickly moved to his record target. First shot a ten, second shot an X. He was in the zone as he loaded and fired as fast as he could. By shot nine he was only down one point, this was going to be good. As he loaded number ten and shoved his rifle forward he aimed at.....Nothing! No target, only foot tall grass on the hill side waving in the breeze. He lifted his head from the rifle only to see the legs of his target stand sticking straight up in the air. A gust of wind had come down like the hand of the Devil himself and swatted his, and only his target stand over. Perhaps a sign that this was not going to be a good day for ammo testing after all. Maybe next month. Dispite all the poor conditions there were few bright spots. Charlie Hawkins was the only one to break into the 240's today and Linda Johnson place in both Sporter and Unlimited with her CZ. Our next match will be June 21st right after the IR 50/50 matches, can't wait to see what Mother Nature has in store by then.

Scores today were good today but not great.

It started getting hot this morning. It is suppose to get up to 90 today.

I am going to work on the pistol rules today. When they are finished I will email a copy of them to you all. I will take me a few days to put them together.

I am very interested in a board position. I need to know where and how often we get together for board meetings? I am anxious to meet everyone, especially Kolin. He has helped me so much getting the USBR shooting started down here and now we are getting started in Aberdeen Washington.

Have a great rest of the day.

Thanks, Bob

Kolin, what a day! Good turn out and some good scores.

I do believe I shot a National record. In the .17 50 yard Sporter class Bob Springstead shot a 229/4x. I bought Bob’s gun and shot a 219/3x last week. Today I shot a 242/4x. I had three people score my target and sign it. Scorers were Roger Baxter, Dave Christie, and Bud Lawry. Anything else we need to do? I can take a picture of it and email it to you. Let me know.

What a day.

Well I was back shooting after being out of town last week. I shot a personal best again with my sporter pistol (219/3x).

I also had a .22 pistol built on a Turbo action and shot it today for the first time and shot a 234.

BCGOA
April 27

Spring had finely arrived in the Mountain State of West Virginia and those few still interested in centerfire score shooting arrived with it Sunday April 27th at the BCGOA Shooting Range located in Flatwoods WV. The sun was shining and the wind wasn't to rapid for a change, so forward we went into the first score match of the year, just being thankful we had two in each class...

It was a beautiful spring morning as the Match Director left for the range, the snow flakes gently drifted to the ground.... SNOW! In APRIL? Did he miss the massive earthquake that must have happened during the night shifting Oregon northward into Canada? Was this some cosmic joke to put Al Gore in his place? The cherry trees are blossoming for heavens sake it can't snow!!!!! Well, denial being a match directors greatest gift he was sure that by the time he drove the 40 miles to the range the weather would get much better. As he pulled into the range he noted that the inch of snow covering the bridge was melting and undisturbed, he was the first one here. He stepped out of his truck to enjoy the solitude and quiet before the days events began, first IR 50/50 then USBR. It was then that he noticed that the breeze was cold enough to freeze his a... I mean ears off. No problem he though, by the time USBR rolls around this afternoon it will warm up. Things went pretty well through the IR 50/50 portion of the day with only one wind flag and one wind probe blown over. The snow had just about all melted and things were looking up as they set up the USBR targets. Oh sure the clouds were getting dark and the breeze was a bit swirly but hey, it's spring, how bad can it be? As the Match Director called the shooters to the line he could see a few hail stones coming down and wondered what would happen if one of his bullets hit one of them on it's the way to the target. Not to worry he though as he called the "Commence Fire" command, it's just a few scattered ice dro..... at that moment the sky opened and for the first ten minutes of shooting time the range was pounded by hail as the ground turned white! As it turned out this was the best shooting condition of the whole day. During that ten minutes when the cloud was parked over the range the wind absolutely stopped and those who got all of their shots off quick ly posted some pretty good scores. As quickly as it started the hail abruptly quit and the wind was back, it blew for the rest of the match.

Jim and Linda Johnson came down from Albany to shiver with us, they were both shooting CZ's and Linda is shooting quite well with hers posting a 226 2X to win the Sporter class. Fred Leeds was in from Nevada again has been shooting well the last few matches. This was his first try at the USBR target and he has already broken into the 240's, a good score on a tough day.

Our next match will be May 17th., IR 50/50 starts at 9AM with USBR to follow.

Well, today was a good day to shoot. We had a little wind and it was cool. The scores were really great. Bud shot a 240 again with Larry right behind him with a 239 and 10x”s.

We also shot our Ruger 10/22 match and everyone seemed to enjoy it.

Thanks, Bob

Charles Bailey took all the money cans. The gift certifcates to Bill's went to Cecil Brewer and Emily. Steve,Rhiannon, Charlie Free and I won the door prizes. The turn out was a little off this month. The wind steadily got stronger all day. Doyle Martin had a triple bypass last month and is doing good from his reports maybe he will be able to come back next soon. I hope to we everyone next month and remember keep it in the 10.

You could not believe the rain today.  It rained so hard we could hardly see the targets at 50 yards.  But the scores were still pretty good.  1 X separated the two top shooters.
